Let’s Talk Cosmetic Tattooing

What is cosmetic tattooing?

Cosmetic tattooing is also known as permanent makeup. The most common cosmetic tattoos right now are lip liners, eye liners, and eyebrow fillers. As you can tell cosmetic tattooing has been dominated by the female population. If you haven’t noticed, colored in eye brows are the new craze this year. Women are using eye pencils, creams, and powder to create an either non- existent eye brow or exaggerating a very dramatic arch. Cosmetic tattooing is not only eliminating the effort it takes to create this look every day but also saving money, makeup isn’t cheap!

Permanent makeup is not the only form of cosmetic tattooing. Many burn victims have found cosmetic tattooing to be helpful in covering scars, also known as micro pigmentation. This can also be an effective alternative for men and women with Vitiligo. Men, typically Hollywood stars have been rumored to use this method to show stubble in areas of baldness as well. So there are all different methods and reasons for cosmetic tattooing. Even my 75 year old grandma recently had her eyeliner tattooed. I have to say it is very natural looking and she is more hip and beautiful than ever! Not to mention one less step for her when putting on her makeup.

Cosmetic tattooing can be a risky move. If not done properly, not only is it on your face where everyone can see but it is not easy to remove. We recommend doing A LOT of research before choosing a tattoo artist. Permanent makeup is applied just like a tattoo. A needle penetrates your skin and releases the pigment to the area. The only difference, the ink used in cosmetic tattooing has an iron-oxide. However, this ink is not laser friendly. Under a laser, such as the PicoSure the ink will oxidize and darken (possible even dark brown or black). Our suggestion is start off small, it is easier to add color and thicken lines but very hard to reverse.

Whether you are having your lips enhanced or scars covered, cosmetic tattooing is not to be taken lightly. Like we always say… finding the right tattoo artist is by far the most important step!
